After EMGSketchFest 1

I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but Ellen Million Graphics promotes creativity in quite the festive fashion! We maintain a coloring group on Facebook, where members receive free coloring pages to color and show off to friends and family. We maintain Portrait Adoption, a gallery where players of RPGs (or even Game Masters or simply writers) can find their characters. And we host monthly Sketch Fests where any artist can participate in a 48-hour period where they have permission to sketch freely, to experiment boldly, and not focus on perfection.

In Sketch Fest, you get one hour to work on a particular illustration – or knitting project or piece of jewelry or whatever your particular creative form may be. After an hour, you put it down. (You can work on it in subsequent hours if you don’t yet wish to move on to the next thing.) There are prompts contributed to each Sketch Fest by participants and watchers, so inspiration is provided if you don’t bring your own. Each artist shares their pieces in the Sketch Fest gallery, where participants and watchers can comment. And artists can even sell their creations – either the original or prints, right through the gallery!

EMG’s Sketch Fest has been going for 7 years and we’ll celebrate our 100th Sketch Fest in June. That’s dozens upon dozens of participating artists contributing over 18,000 sketches (or other created items)!

It’s amazing.

It’s inspiring.

It’s exciting! So we’re honoring some of those artists today, showing off the pieces they started during a Sketch Fest and finished later, finalizing their sketches into breathtaking works of art.

We begin with “Wisdom,” a serene and striking scene sketched by Inge Geertsma during Sketch Fest #81, inspired by Tara N. Colna’s prompt of “The Snowy Owl.” Working within the Skech Fest hour, Inge detailed the main figure – a winged woman – and more loosely sketched out a tree and its branches, rife with edged ovals that would later become owls. “Owls are so nice to draw,” Inge said. She completed the painting two months later in January of 2017 – with details so lovely you can feel the cold, see the wind ruffling the snowy owls’ feathers, and admire the dreamcatcher clasped in her lady’s hands.

During October 2013’s Sketch Fest #43, Afke van Herpt answered Miss Ava’s “use as many colours as you can” prompt with characteristic verve. In “As Many Colors,” a woman with multicolored hair took shape under her hands, rainbow electric. Afke said, “I’ve decided to use all the Copic colors I have in one picture. I ran out of time, used 79 out of my 99 so far (skin hues and grays still remaining).” Afke firmed up the woman’s form, lightened her shoulder, and threw that fabulous hair into even greater relief a couple of years later.

We close with “Generating Light,” a sketch by Mary Rose Magpily she created a couple of months ago during Sketch Fest #91. Her soft sketch of a vague female forming hovering in a light bulb held aloft before a larger person’s face afterward became a full-color illustration reminiscent of an illustrated novel – luminescent and bright, with that ineffable comic quality.

Thank you to all the artists who participate each month in Sketch Fest – we enjoy the privilege of watching you work! And for everyone who’d like to play next Sketch Fest – it’s December 9th through 11th. (Here’s the Facebook event, if you please.) We look forward to seeing you there!

Don’t forget to use our official hashtag on social media: #EMGSketchFest.

That’s a Wrap on EMG Sketch Fest 93!

That’s a wrap, folks! We’re putting #EMGSketchFest 93 to bed, though you may see some additional illustrations added to the gallery – don’t forget to visit and explore. You also might find some new art to decorate your walls or gift to friends and family for the winter holidays.

How about a last few featured illustrations? Sounds great to me!

“Ice Dragon” by Cindy Hill

Cindy Hill did two sketches this Sketch Fest and one of them is this great “Ice Dragon” with finely segmented scales. This is a work-in-progress and it’s pretty cool.

“Word Salade” by Francis Bax

This clever combination of decorative fonts is the work of Francis Bax – she plans to finish this “Word Salade” up later!

“Healing Heart” by Afke van Herpt

Inspired by Becca “Boo” Moore’s prompt of “Frozen Heart,” Afke van Herpt’s mind conjured up this image – and she created it as a stamp! It’s a bit off-prompt, but still fabulous.

“Majestic Deer” by Amy Sue Stirland

Amy Sue Stirland sketched this “Majestic Deer,” and expects it’ll make a fine watercolor. We’ll have to keep an eye out for what she does this with this one!

“Let It Rain” by Maria J. William

We close with Maria J. William’s “Let It Rain,” a gorgeous illustration of fairy beauty and abandon as this tiny creature with butterfly wings dances in the rain beneath a leafy umbrella. You can get the original sketch, 6″ x 8″ colored pencil and white charcoal on toned paper. Prints available for $5 – $10.

We hope you enjoyed this #EMGSketchFest weekend! If you’re new, we do these every month and everyone’s invited – just register at the site. You can submit prompts or even participate with creations of every stripe – from jewelry and crochet to illustrations and stamps.

#EMGSketchFest 94 is December 8 – 10: we hope to see you there

EMG Sketch Fest 93 is nearly done!

The clock is ticking down, my friends, to the time when #EMGSketchFest 93 is put to bed! But we’re not quite there yet, so there’s still time to participate – and so many wonders to appreciate. Join me for a sneak peek!

“Snow Leopard” by Nathalie Reinholz

Nathalie sketched this adorable little “Snow Leopard” that captures a bit of that Zootopia spirit quite nicely! You can pick up this postcard-sized original for only $30! Ink on watercolor paper.

“Winter Unicorn” by Ellen Million

This shaggy beauty appears courtesy of Ellen Million and her pencil! This shaggy “Winter Unicorn” is 5.5″ x 8.5″ and the original’s available (to be cleaned up and finished a little more) for $20.

“Moon Crown” by Mayumi Ogihara

Mayumi Ogihara depicted this “Moon Crown” and its lovely bearer with colored pencils, pastels, acrylic, and glitter on toned paper. “I added some glitters on her crown and the fur which you can’t see in the scanned image, but they’re quite sparkly,” she adds. She’s offering the original for only $27, and you can get various prints for $6 – $12.

“Mr. Tumnus and the Lamp Post” by Caitlin Woods

This last one is a winter classic! Caitlin Woods sketched Mr. Tumnus as we first met him in Narnia. It does remind one of a certain gifty time of year!

That’s it for now – head on over to the main #EMGSketchFest 93 gallery for more!

Welcome to November’s EMG Sketch Fest!

Afternoon, everyone! Have you been enjoying #EMGSketchFest 93? We’ve been partying with snow-unicorns, an elephant, leopards, last leaves, and more. It’s been a relaxing and meditative event so far, perfect for a relaxing Saturday before the holiday season gets into full swing.

Let’s take a look, shall we?

“Last Leaf” by Sally Gilroy

A chilly scene by Sally Gilroy still conveys that some playfulness marks the gateway between autumn and winter. Graphite and marker.

“Fox and Raven” by Kathy Nutt

Kathy Nutt has sketched a delicately lovely tableau of fox and raven within trees and before the moon. Micron pen sketch.

“Angelic” by Tricia Danby

A serene angel takes form under Tricia Danby’s hands, clad in lushly royal purple, with a darling owl companion.

“Dragonborn” by Rowan Lewgalon

Soulful eyes belie the “Dragonborn” in this pretty portrait by Rowan Lewgalon. You can get a print of this one for $15!

“Old Soul” by Peter van Herpt

Peter van Herpt has shared an “Old Soul” with us in a fantastic elephant sketch. Created using Conté crayons.

You know what you should do now, yeah? Click on over and enjoy the full #EMGSketchFest 93 gallery! And check back here later for more highlights.

Still Up? Come Sketch Fest!

November is upon us, and some of us have seen snow already! (Just don’t bring it up with Ellen.) Which means our very first submitted work for #EMGSketchFest 93 is not a surprise:

“Ice Dragon” by Anastasia Bisel

Anastasia Bisel has brought us a fantastic sketch of an ice dragon, and I definitely feel colder already. Perfect excuse to curl up with this cup of hot chocolate before bed, in my opinion!

Check out the full gallery and join us tomorrow for more #EMGSketchFest 93. Leave prompts or create art yourself if you’re registered! And don’t forget to use our official hashtag when sharing or chatting on social media. Goodnight!

Farewell, Sketch Fest #92!

Ah, #EMGSketchFest 92, we hardly knew ye… but we had a heck of a time! We’re over the moon (literally, in some cases??) about the breadth of creativity in the gallery, and we can’t wait to see what our participating artists upload in the hours and days to come. (Did you know? Artists can upload finished versions of their works-in-progress!)

It’s time for our last sneak peek, this one celebrating Sketch Fest Sunday and autumn and Halloween.

“Krampus Santa” by Teri Sherman

Okay, okay, calm down. I know we’re all “You shall not pass!” at Christmas from our autumnal October shores, but Teri Sherman’s fantastically creepy illustration is totally Halloween-adjacent. Look at that Krampus!

“Selene” by Rowan Lewgalon

Deirde M. Murphy gave us the wonderful prompt “The Moon, wearing beautiful veils” and Rowan Lewgalon took it and ran with it beautifully. Her silvery-haired “Selene” can rule our glittering nights – and you can purchase a print for $15!

“Autumn Leaf Pixie” by Nathalie Reinholz

The joy of this little “Autumn Leaf Pixie” is contagious – fabulous work by artist Nathalie Reinholz! You can pick up this one-of-a-kind watercolor painting with colored pencils for only $20.

“Sugar Skull Stamp” by Afke van Herpt

Afke van Herpt decided to try something different this Sketch Fest, and made lovely and spooky little stamp! The stamp is inspired by a sugar skull, commonly associated with Dia de lost Muertos (which takes place at the end of October through the first couple days of November). You can pick up this 1.5″ stamp for $16.

“Autumn Tears” by Eimiel

Don’t cry, dryad! #EMGSketchFest 92 may be over, but there’s still tons of great art out there. Oh, wait, Eimiel’s dryad is crying “Autumn Tears” over the loss of her foliage in a lovely watercolor painting. No worries – they’ll be renewed!

We hope you enjoyed these sneak peeks during #EMGSketchFest weekend – now click over to the full gallery for more (a pouncing fox, a watchful King of the Forest, a spooky kitty)! And don’t forget to use our official hashtag of #EMGSketchFest when sharing on social media. See you next Sketch Fest!

(To be the first to hear about next Sketch Fest’s dates, follow us on Facebook.)

Sketch Festing the Night Away

Are you a fan of spooky fun? You have got to check out #EMGSketchFest 92! I’m serious – since it’s October, we have a ton of fun and spooky creations in the gallery. You can even pick up prints or original art of fantastic witches, ethereal owls, or even a gothic mermaid!

Okay, enough chatter. Let’s skip to the featured illustrations for the evening!

“Cute Ghost” by Nicole Madden

Nicole Madden brings us this ghostly cutie based on Sarah Alden’s “cute ghost” prompt. The bow-wearing ghosties are adorable, and we love the stripes and stitched-mouth look on her main figure!

“Colourful Leaves” by Peter C.M. Van Herpt

Peter captured the taste of autumn with this gorgeous pile of autumn leaves – look at the depth, and the richness of the colors! Derwent Colour Soft on Mi-Teintes.

“New Moon Unicorn” by Kathy Nutt

Kathy Nutt’s “New Moon Unicorn” is a celebration of stylized lines and wild beauty. All captured by Micron pen! An inspired interpretation of Beth “Boo” Moore’s “Dark Unicorn” prompt.

“Bewitching” by Maria J. William

We opened with a ghost; how can we not close with a witch? Maria J. William drew this bewitching beauty with colored pencils and white charcoal on toned paper. The original and prints are available!

We’re signing off for the night, but feel free to keep rocking #EMGSketchFest by visiting the gallery and even creating! (Don’t forget to use our official hashtag, #EMGSketchFest when posting to social media.)

Welcome to Sketch Fest Saturday 92!

Have you been enjoying your Saturday afternoon? We have! There are some spectacularly creative pieces in the #EMGSketchFest 92 gallery that you’re really missing out on if you haven’t been participating.

You don’t have to create anything to join in Sketch Fest – you can just turn up to admire the gallery and share your thoughts on social media! (Use our official hashtag, #EMGSketchFest, if you do.) And if you do create, it doesn’t have to be paintings or sketches – you can do sculpting, knitting, crochet, jewelry-making, whatever you’d like!

Let’s feature some illustrations to get you stoked and clicking through to the full shebang:

“Look at My Mushrooms!” by Shelley M. Walker

Shelley M. Walker shared a fairy with fetching mushroom, flower, and grass foliage atop its adorable head. “Look at my mushrooms!” they cry. How can we not?

“The Queen of the Night” by Mayumi Ogihara

The Queen of the Night” and her compelling gaze is depicted courtesy of Mayumi Ogihara’s talent and Kathy Nutt’s “Crow Royalty” prompt! This work-in-progress is also up for grabs – Mayumi will be selling the original sketch for $27! 5×7-inch graphite sketch on Bristol.

“Crow Royalty” by Katerina Koukiotis

Speaking of “Crow Royalty,” Katerina Koukiotis brought us a chibi Jon Snow with tiny Ghost! He may know nothing, but we know he’s the most adorable Crow. 5×7-inch ink sketch.

“Ethereal Barn Owl” by Renee Erickson

You can almost feel the wind coming off of Renee Erickson’s “Ethereal Barn Owl“! Renee was inspired by Mayumi Ogihara’s prompt “Ethereal Owl”: “As soon as I read this prompt, the image of a barn owl with the back light filtering through it’s feathers came to mind. Thank you for the prompt Mayumi, I had fun painting this.” The original 12×16-inch oil on canvas may be available for purchase later, so check back!

“Black Unicorn Under a White Full Moon” by Amy Sue Stirland

Our last featured illustration for now is “Black Unicorn Under a White Full Moon” by Amy Sue Stirland! Amy’s notes read: “Doesn’t he look just majestic on that rise?!?” Yes. Yes, he does. “I was thinking of making him darker then realized that I liked being able to see his details. I might make an ACEO that has a full silhouette.” This 5×7-inch black and white pen inks and washes on tinted art paper can be purchased for $17!

We hope you enjoyed this little taste of #EMGSketchFest 92 – now get yourself to the full gallery and discover vampires, goblins, and foxes!

Featured Artist: Brandy Woods

An elf with dark skin and long white hair occupies the right 2/3rds of the image, turned toward the viewer. Her right arm holds a white cloak with edging of golden embroidery closed at her throat; the sleeve depicted on her right arm is purple with a golden cuff. She wears a diadem of gold with a dark center-set jewel. Her eyes are tilted, and a subtle smile plays on her lips. The background is painted pale gold.
Elven Portrait Adoption

Welcome to Ellen Million Graphics’ Featured Artist of the Week! Each week (or so), we select an EMG artist and share their work and history. We hope you enjoy getting to see incredible artists this way.

This week, our spotlight turns to illuminate that artist of colorful characters and storied scenes, Brandy Woods! Brandy joins us from Montreal, and is originally from Louisiana where the walls of her family home were papered in her childhood drawings.

A sketch of a human woman, examining a leaf held before her face between pointer finger and thumb. Her bust is depicted. Her hair long, moving in an unseen wind. She wears a simple diadem with a curved decorative element in the center of her forehead. She appears to be wearing a plain, colored dress with some small lace edging at neckline and the one cuff in the illustration's view. She also wears a simple necklace: a thin chain and some circular center element.
Curious Human Portrait Adoption

“My mom tells me that even before I held a pencil, I was using fingernail polish to ‘paint’ on my highchair,” Brandy confided. She’s largely self-taught, and drew early inspiration from Wendy Pini before being deeply influenced by manga. She’s spent the years since refining her style, and attended Dawson College’s Illustration & Design program in her 30’s, graduating at the top of her class with honors and multiple scholarships.

When creating, Brandy most often sketches in pencil before digitally coloring her works in Corel Painter or Photoshop. She also enjoys working with acrylics, oils, and watercolors. Much of her inspiration is drawn from fantasy and various world cultures. When she’s not creating, you’re likely to find her reading—”One of my life goals is to have a library like Neil Gaiman’s,” she told us (a worthy goal!)—or playing video games. She enjoys science fiction, fantasy, mythology, and more. She also enjoys collecting Breyer horses, red foxes, and fountain pens. You can discover more about her and her work at her website.

A full figure stands against a soft background of mountainous brown-grey terrain and a blue-white sky. He stands with feet spread and arms held aloft. A brown owl is just alighting on the figures left arm. He faces the viewer; his left arm is covered with a baldric and arm-length glove. His right arm is bare, as is much of his smooth chest. He wears a short cropped purple vest, a teal cloth belt gathered by a gold center buckle over draped purple cloth with golden detailing in a thick edge over bagg golden pants tucked into knee-high brown boots. He also wears a purple bandana with golden detailing over his dark hair. He has a scarred face, the line running over his left eye. He bears a serious expression, and a partially open mouth. His facial hair is dark, and sort of an extended goatee out to the sides.

Spellcaster Portrait Adoption

Brandy is one of EMG’s most popular Portrait Adoption artists, with a gallery of seventeen portraits – several of which are on wishlists and many of which come with the option to purchase the original. She’s an inspired portrait artist as well – her character studies pull off impressive characterization in expression, stance, clothing and equipment details, and more. You can even request customizations on a number of her portraits. In her gallery, you’ll find everything from women warriors in both sensible and non-sensible armor, dark elves and skeptical elves, spellcasters and unicorn companions and characters in excessively long coats. She’s also open to commissions! We invite you to discover more of her work at EMG through the link below!
