Tempestuousness and Whimsy

Our eleventy-first Sketch Fest has come to an end! But that doesn’t mean the gallery’s locked – some additional illustrations may be added as our artists finish uploading the creations inspired by their claimed prompts.

You should definitely swing by the full gallery – in a bit. Let us whet your appetite with some featured illustrations first.

Inspired by Julie Rabischung’s prompt of “lotus flower mermaid,” Maigan Lynn drew this pale and long-lashed fish-tailed beauty. “Lily” is drawn with colored pencils on 5.5″ x 8.5″ on toned paper. Pick up the original for $35.

“The Blue Fox Carried by a Balloon” by Erich Heidewald

Erich Heidewald drew this delightful blue fox who’s “[f]loating, floating away!” with a whimsical grin on their muzzle. This illustration is colored pencils on 3.5″ x 5.25″ on 60 lb sketch paper.

There’s a sublime watchfulness in Kathy Nutt’s line drawing of a “Little Red Hen.” We can just see this chicken giving a mischievously loud bacaw before shimmying her feathers and looking for feed.

Mayumi Ogihara sketched this “Queen of Shadows” with her vulnerable yet piercing gaze and perhaps a hint of a raven-feather collar and a truly impressive crown. This is an unfinished digital sketch inspired by Maigan Lynn’s “the darkest dark” prompt, and Mayumi may finish it after some more brainstorming time.

“Storm Fairy” by Katherine Rose Barber is a breathtaking sketch of tempestuous beauty. She also did a speed-sketch of this, which will be up on her YouTube later – be sure to check it out.

“Just Wondering” by Peter C.M. van Herpt

This majestic gorilla by Peter C. M. van Herpt was created in pencil and pastel pencil and inspired by Nathalie Edelhirsch’s prompt of “just wondering.”

Goblin Kings and Moon Foxes!

Have a good Saturday? We sure did! And while it may be drawing to a close, there’s still a lovely Sketch Fest Sunday to go.

In the dog days of summer, it’s lovely to sit and fish by a cooling waterfall – particularly if you’re a fairy lad. Amy Sue Stirland painted this lovely scene in watercolors on 3″ x 5″ Bristol. Purchase the original painting for $15!

This gorgeous “Vintage Fairy” by Linzi Fay is sketched on 5.5″ x 8.5″ toned tan paper. Linzi said, “I used an old vintage photograph to draw this fairy” for that extra touch of authenticity. You can hang the original on your wall for $28.

Elma Bree created this rose-and-thorn-draped “Gothic Elf,” inspired by Mayumi Ogihara’s prompt.

This graphite sketch of the “Goblin King” by Sally Gilroy has captured the mischief and amusement that Jareth radiates on the regular.

This whimsical and lovely “Moon Fox” was created by Julie Rabischung with ink, white gouache, and watercolors on toned Canson paper. You can buy the original 4″ x 6″ watercolor for $20 or pick up a print for $7.

EMG Sketch Fest #111

Welcome to July’s Sketch Fest Saturday! This is our eleventy-first Sketch Fest, but don’t worry – we won’t make a puzzling speech like “I don’t know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.” before disappearing with a magic ring.

Promise.

Let’s dive into some featured illustrations before you tumble down into the full gallery.

The founder of our Sketch Fest feast, Ellen Million, had the first piece of art uploaded to our gallery this weekend! This art card is an overdue Junicorn sketch; “Falling Star Filly” is colored pencils on colored paper measuring 2.5″ x 3.5″ and can be purchased for $15.

“Centaur of Attention” by Becca “Boo” Moore

We love a fun pun, and Becca “Boo” Moore has tickled our funny bones with “Centaur of Attention.” Becca said, “I think she turned out really pretty and fun” and we agree! The original ink and marker sketch on 8.5″ x 11″ cardstock can be purchased for $35.

This handsome fellow is “Moon Fox” and, in artist Linda Sayegh’s own words, a “cute little fox sitting out in the moonlight.” This illustration is in colored pencils and Sharpie paint pen on Strathmore toned tan paper measuring 5″ x 7″. Snag the original drawing for $45!

This is Holly Broxson’s first Sketch Fest as an artist, and she’s drawn this fantastic fungus witch in ink in her sketchbook. This is one look we’d love to see cosplayed!

Tesha Gaither drew this charming “baticorn” with a fruitbat face in a lovely shade of purple.

We sketched the weekend away!

We celebrated EMG Sketch Fest 110 this past weekend, and all our attendees had a lovely time! There are dozens of sketches and other creations uploaded to the gallery and several items for sale as well.

How about a few highlights?

This delicate “Forget Me Not” flower is a rough sketch from Juliana C. Velasco in response to the prompt “May flower.”

Jill Britt plucked Mayumi Ogihara’s prompt, “Seashell Crown,” like the loveliest of beach-found treasure, sketching this lovely “Crowned” figure of spindrift and dreams.

“Peony” by Jenna Wing-hu is an intricately beautiful and delicate sketch of “a beautiful princess with a peony on top of her head.”

“Cthulhu dreaming in R’lyeh” by Kathy Nutt

Kathy played with acrylic paints this Sketch Fest, illustrating “Cthulhu dreaming in R’lyeh.” 12×12 gallery wrapped black canvas.

“King of the Nightmares” by Tesha Gaither

Tesha Gaither created this “King of the Nightmares” illustration – that is both wonderfully creepy and of great composition – in response to douggle’s “King of the monsters.”

Featured Artist: Samantha J. Decker

Welcome to Ellen Million Graphic’s Featured Artist of the Week! Each week, we select an EMG artist and share their work and history. We hope you enjoy getting to see incredible artists this way.

Everyone, please turn your attention to the prolific and talented Samantha J. Decker! An American born in Germany, Samantha grew up in classic military brat style and is currently settled in Texas. She holds a BA in Art, and has owned her own art business since 2008. She does freelance work in graphic design, children’s book illustration, comic book covers, and more – including great custom chibi characters over at Fiverr. You can discover her work – strongly influenced by fantasy, mythology, and Disney – over at her website.

Samantha has participated in EMG Sketch Fests since 2013. She’s steadily contributed playful and refined sketches, from her innocently gluttonous “Blueberry Dragon” and her Disney-influenced “Baby Phoenix” to fierce wolf-accompanied Warrior Princess and enigmatic “Dragon Moon.” Samantha’s work has also been featured in EMG coloring books, and she has her own solo title: Fairies and Friends. The “Cozy Socks” fairies above are a coloring page in that book!

Featured Artist: Jenny Heidewald

This week, we’re celebrating the effusive and dedicated Jenny Heidewald! Jenny joins us from the eastern US, and is a proudly self-taught artist. She remembers the exact moment she decided to become an artist: when she was touched by the hand of God. She recalls watching her mother drawing, an illustration of the hand of God reaching forth from the clouds magically flowing into existence on a blank sheet of paper. And that was it: the moment she knew that’s what she wanted to do. She’s been practicing her craft ever since. You can explore more of her work on her Facebook page and at her DeviantArt gallery.

Jenny has been a great friend to and supporter of Ellen Million Graphics for many years. She even participated in Sketch Fest before the first official Sketch Fest! Jenny has over 1000 playful and colorful sketches in her Sketch Fest gallery, and has provided hundreds of prompts for Sketch Fest artists as well. Her work is featured in several EMG coloring books, and her Portrait Adoption gallery has encompassed over 100 portraits – over half of which have been adopted, proving her character illustrations are popular indeed!

Featured Artist: Mitzi Sato-Wiuff

This week, our spotlight turns upon the gleaming and diligent Mitzi Satu-Wiuff! Mitzi is originally from Japan and, while she now lives in Colorado, creates work imbued with the cultural spirit of her homeland. She identifies shojo manga, tattoo art, and woodblock prints from Japan as distinct influences upon her work. Her passion for ballet also shows in the arrested movement of her painted and sketched figures, and her erstwhile focus on landscapes and florals brings a remarkable layered detail to her current work in fantasy art. Mitzi has worked with Ellen Million Graphics since she first achieved her dream of publishing a coloring book with us in 2011: you can still find Gardening and Goddesses (along with a second volume!) in our storefront linked below. Maria J. William sketched “Silent Tears” in colored pencils, white charcoal, and white acrylic on toned paper. The 6×8 original is available for just $40 and prints at various sizes are available for $7-$10.

Katerina Koukiotis’ Jon Snow is ready to go – as is she for the last season of Game of Thrones! This pencil sketch is on toned paper and measures 5×7. The original sketch is available for only $35.

April Bullet Journal by Amy Sue Stirland

Amy Sue Stirland shared the watercolor painting for April she did in her bullet journal – so adorable, and evocative of April showers! Watercolor and markers on journal paper.

Deirdre spent some time this weekend painting a medallion she bought: “It’s not a sketch, exactly, but I was arting with you all and wanted to share.” We’re happy that you did! The delicate colors are lovely.

Capricorn and Fishing Float by Tallulah Cunningham

About “Capricorn and Fishing Float,” Tallulah said, “I think this has been my favourite sketch this sketchfest. Yellow highlighter undersketch (done while I was walking the dog) and the copic and colour pencil worked over the top. The highlighter resists the copic – showing the underlying concept sketch in places.” This sketch is completely wonderful – and you could take the original home for $20.

Sketchin’ Late Saturday Night

It’s super-late, but we couldn’t resist a nightcap tease of all the amazing creativity percolating over in the Sketch Fest #108 gallery! Check out these five featured illustrations and then dive into the over 60 drawings uploaded so far… mermaids, a steampunk hummingbirds and meerkats await!

Inspired by Tricia Danby’s prompt of “Emerald prince / princess / angel,” Kathy Nutt sketched this feather-winged beauty in micron and colored pencils.

This scrumptious “Celestial Milkshake” was illustrated by Jill Britt – and I think we could all go for one of these at the Galaxy Gas ‘n’ Go local to the Milky Way right now.

This “!Space Age Milkshake!” by Corgi is clearly sold by the Spiral Arm Diner across from the Galaxy Gas ‘n’ Go – and it looks just as scrumptious! So we’re definitely stopping for both if y’all will just hop in my space-car.

Let’s come back down to Earth and enjoy a bit of the hanami season vicariously through Sally Gilroy’s lovely sketch of cherry blossoms in bloom. This is a graphite sketch that Sally is thinking of doing in watercolors as well.

Our last featured illustration of the night comes to us from deep beneath the sea and also the pen of the founder of our Sketch Fest feast – Ellen Million! An octopus having tea and making up part of a pun is just the perfect endcap to April’s Sketch Fest Saturday.
